HISTORY

The Kansas City River Market, originally known as the River Quay, was founded in the mid-1800s as a fur trading post. By 1850, the neighborhood was coined the “Town of Kansas,” and in 1853, the “City of Kansas.” Throughout the years, this area has become well known for its diverse mix of shopping and dining, and is also home to the City Market, the oldest, largest and most enduring public farmers market in the Midwest.

Flash-forward to 2018, Epoch Developments, a firm that’s become a preservation and place making leader in downtown Kansas City, began work on transforming the River Market’s Delaware block into an active district within the River Market.
